Spring of 2020 – Conceptional Ideas Come to Life on SketchUp

Original Design

During the spring of 2020 Michael purchased the 3D Modelling Program SketchUp and began designing our 5 Partial Sphere 3 Frequency Icosahedron Dome.

Because of post-COVID inflation rates we are not building the annex and main dome (dome to the left). We have chosen to build the garage and workshop section of the original design, with a studio apartment above to call home.

Two years after he started putting his ideas into 3D form, construction begins with Michael as the one man general contractor.

Michael has designed, researched, organized, been part of or is building every aspect of our dome.

We hope you enjoy this blog series.

July & August – 2023 – Concrete Wedges For The Foundation Hubs

The dome focused summer months of 2023 were spent making forms for 5 concrete wedges, pouring the cement, removing the forms, then preparing for hubs and struts.

Family Help

Michael’s brother Joel traveled from Ontario to help out for a week.

Joel helped to build the temporary barn we now called the Soap Barn. It is used to store the ’48 Desoto and whatever else we can fit in there. It is called the Soap Barn after the bars of Irish Spring soap put throughout the antique Desoto to deter rodents from making it their home.

Michael’s Uncle Denny traveled from Chicago to help for a week. He put the roof on the Soap Barn and helped pour concrete into the wedge forms.

We were both so grateful for Joel and Denny’s help.

August, 2023 – The Soap Barn

We purchased the shipping container that brought our belongings from Qatar to Canada when we repatriated back in 2019.

Michael eventually emptied it and turned the metal box into his workshop to hold all his tools for building. We call this the Rusty Wrench.

Here is the ’48 Desoto and Rusty Wrench under a full moon. You can see the metal doors of the container have been removed, with Michael building a new entrance.
