Preamble
This camel ride adventure wasn’t what I was hoping for.
I booked an hour and a half camel ride for Michael and I to watch the sunrise.
I expected a one and a half hour camel ride through Wadi Rum. It would happen as the morning sun came up over the horizon.
What this actually was a short camel ride from our camp to a nearby location.
We dismounted, then climbed up on a rock to then sit for an hour and watch the sunrise.
Then the short camel ride back to camp.
An hour of that hour and a half was sitting on a rock – not riding a camel.
I was very disappointed about that, especially since we paid 40 JOD.
This equals to about 75 CAD – to sit on a rock.
Jordan is an expensive country to visit.
The Adventure
We met our guide and camels in the camp parking lot at 5:30am.
It was still dark. We knew where to locate our adventure from the sounds of the camels. We also heard the conversations between the men with many camels in a large caravan.
Our guide arrived by truck as the man with the camel caravan left a few camels for us.
The man leading the camel caravan carried on to his next destination. I later concluded that this destination was other nearby camps. He intended to drop off camels for the same sunrise tour.
Mounting the camels in the dark was a bit daunting. My camel was not very happy and suddenly decided to stand up. His back legs went up, throwing me forward. Then his front legs rose, tossing me back! Thankfully there are large horns on the saddle to hold onto!

Arrival
We arrived at a rock formation. Our Somalian guide pointed out that we would get off the camels. We would then climb up rocks to watch the sunrise.
I was surprised by this.
I was so disappointed because I wanted to ride the camels for the entire tour, not sit on a rock.
I had wondered why our guide wasn’t riding a camel to lead our mini caravan into the desert.
That was because our destination was only a short walk/camel ride to get there.

As we made our way to the rock, I noticed this lizard trail in the sand.

Morning Prayers
Our Somalian guide finds a quiet place for his morning prayers.

Just Camels, A Dog & Me
I settled in on the rock to watch the sunrise, still feeling bitter about this experience.
However, I started to enjoy the solitude and quiet of our surroundings.
Michael was up on the rocks, the guide was saying his prayers.
It was just the camels, a dog and me.

Caravans Arrive
But, soon this solitude changed as more caravans approached.
I quickly realized this was a tourist location to the watch the sun rise.
Not a special place picked for us by our guide.
My bitterness increased.

Camels & Guides
Soon our caravan of three camels had company.
Guides gathered together as tourists climbed a rock to settle in and watch the sun rise.

Tour Is Over
Then just like that, it was over.
All the tourists climbed down from the rock to return to their caravans.

A baby camel with one of the caravans.

Once Again, All Is Quiet
With all the caravans gone, a silence falls over the area.

Back To Camp

Our Quiet Somalian Guide
Time to say goodbye to our very quiet guide.

Now that our tour was over, our guide collected this camel left behind and added him with the others. They started walking into the desert.

A dog from our camp comes over to say hello.

What little time I had on the camel I enjoyed.
The sunrise was beautiful.
I had released my disappointments and was overall happy with the experience.
I was hungry and it was time to head to the dining hall for breakfast.
