Jerash, Jordan – The Ancient Greco-Roman City of Gerasa/Jerash – Incredible Cardo Maximus – Chariot Tracks

One Of The World’s Best Ancient Greco-Roman Sites

Michael and I have explored ancient Greco-Roman Sites such as:

  • Ancient Agora of Athens
  • Acropolis of Athens
  • Temple of Olympian Zeus
  • The Library of Hadrian
  • The Roman Forum
  • The Arch of Septimius Severus
  • The Colosseum

Of these, Gerasa offered us a unique experience – the opportunity to visualize what it was like to explore daily life in an ancient Roman city, such as:

  • To walk along the main street, the Cardo, lined with shops to a centre intersection, a tetrapylon crossroads for the four main gates into the city
  • There we could decide to perhaps walk towards the West Gate and worship at Artemis’ Temple
  • Or walk all the way to the East Gate, that would take us through the residential area of the city

The history of this ancient city goes back more than 6,500 years.

Best Kept Secret

What makes this ancient Greco-Roman site more appealing than those in Rome and Athens is the entire city is within itself, not woven bits of antiquity within a modern, busy, overcrowded city.

It is like a spacious, one-stop shopping for all your ancient Greco-Roman sites in one!

Gerasa has a hippodrome, temples, a Macellum, theatres, a public forum, an Arch of Hadrian, baths, and churches.

I’ve included a map of the ancient city so you can see how spectacular this site is.

Cardo Maximus

Cardo Maximus is the main north-south street of Gerasa, and was an integral part of Roman city planning.

Built in the 1st Century CE, it is complete with manholes to underground drainagewater fountainsshopsan agora, and even street lights!

Chariot Tracks on Cardo Maximus

Our guide indicated that narrow concave tracks worn into stone blocks of Cardo Maximus were chariot tracks.

I thought this to be very cool.

My toes are perpendicular to two narrow chariot tracks, that are difficult to see in the picture.
