This is a powerhouse statement.
My first thoughts are: if you’re accepting feeling unhappy in your relationship, then that is what you will get.
In my early twenties, I was in a physically, mentally, emotionally abusive relationship.
Why did I stay? Why did I accept it?
At that time, I was undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) with severe abandonment fears.
I stayed because I would have rather been with him, than be abandoned.
I didn’t know I had a choice in men.
I didn’t realize being so unhappy and treated so poorly was not how relationships work.
I didn’t know what healthy love was.
I also felt trapped, and didn’t have a safe place to go.
I eventaully escaped that horrible man, but continued to stumble along the way.
My first introduction to therapy happened at the age of 27 when I entered a 28-day treatment facility for alcoholism.
I was introduced to words like self-love, self-esteem, self-worth, boundaries, emotional regulation and inner-child work.
Still, throughout my late 20’s, 30’s and 40’s I continued to choose not-right-for-me-men.
However, over the years I gradually learned what characteristics I did not want and wanted in a relationship.
With a tool box filled with knowledge of past relationship mistakes, and a better knowledge of how I wanted to be treated, when I was 44 years old I decided to add another.
No more playing house with a man.
No more partner or common-law.
No more one-foot-out-the-back-door, a quick exit.
My next relationship would evolve into marriage.
Today, in my late fifties and 11 years married, my lenses of the love I accept from my husband is based on my ever-growing self-esteem, self-love and self-worth.
My lenses look for open and honest communication, safety, trust, vulnerability, acceptance, respect and laughter.
To nurture the value we see in each other and our marriage.
Is this love scary, and feels vulnerable?
You bet!
And yet, our love evolves and deepens into a peacefulness I never thought possible.
Whatever I accept, I will get.

Thank you Maggie! <3 I love to travel, and I'm enjoying this journey through this exploration of rules to nurture love…. <3 🙂 🙂
Been choosing the wrong men all my life and been through many hard lessons and have been and am doing the work on myself. I’m at a point where I’d like a partner, but it’s not so important anymore and I’m enjoying life on my own. I’m to the point I won’t accept or make excuses for bad behavior anymore because I now realize how much damage that can do to myself. I am healing 🙂
Thank you for sharing this with me. <3 Sounds like your healing journey is one the right track! It's SUCH a journey, 'eh! I hope your healing journey continues to be wonderful and is filled with lots of laughter and joy! <3
Powerful testimony. God can truly heal what was broken and teach us what real love looks like. Glad you found peace, safety, and a husband who loves you well. Blessings to you both.
Thank you Willie. Sending blessings to you, too. 🌻😊
