My Favourite People Are In Sangha

At this point in my recovery journey, my favourite people to be around are in sangha, the community of Recovery Dharma.

I continue to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for my alcoholism.

However, joining Recovery Dharma has given me what was missing in my 12-Step recovery – more in-depth spiritual teachings inspired by Buddha, and the ability to talk about all aspects of my recovery – not just alcoholism.

Recovery Dharma is holistic and inclusive.

Part of a Recovery Dharma meeting is a guided meditation that sets a peaceful, relaxing tone before diving into the discussion.

All those in sangha risk being vulnerable as we share our struggles ranging from alcoholism, drug addiction, sex addiction and eating disorders.

I look forward to my nightly meeting, because in sangha I am with others who are inspired by Buddhist teachings and want to walk this deepened, spiritual path.

My Favourite People To Be Around

My favourite people to be around, at this point in my recovery journey and feeling safe out there in the world, are those within the 12-Step Fellowship I am a part of.

I am with my people, my tribe – those who get me – understand me – who speak the same language I do about alcoholism.

I’ve been at my worst and best with these people, and every day I am welcomed back into the fold because the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

Love and tolerance is our code. That said, I may not like everyone within the fellowship, but I learn to hear their message.

I can grow up, mature into a sober woman, inspired by those whose recovery inspires me.

I truly am part of a miracle.

Not every alcoholic makes it: the end will be either be jails, institutions or death.

It took this alcoholic 27 years to finally admit, accept and truly embrace to understand how a 12-Step program works and saves lives.

For this, I am a miracle, one day at a time.
