Admitting I’m wrong isn’t always easy.
Well, sometimes it is easy to be quick in my apology because it’s evident to do so.
Other times, I’m feeling pretty darn sure I’m right,
How do I know I was 100% correct, and what I’ve said was appropriate or I have seen the situation in the proper light of day?
My gut tells me so.
Deep Down
Ego.
Pride.
These are the driving energies behind my unwillingness to yield, to quickly admit I’m wrong.
Usually embarrassment plays a part as well.
But I ALWAYS know, deep down, how what I’ve said or done was hurtful, wasn’t skillful.
The faster I own up and apologize, the easier it is for life to return to normal.
How the Apology is Accepted Matters
When I quickly admit I’m wrong, how my husband Michael receives it is important.
If he reacts and says “I told you so!” or something along those lines, I immediately regret my vulnerability, my heartfelt action of sincere apology.
It takes a lot of grace and skill on my part not to lash out at his reaction, and to once again – react.
Tone Matters Too
The tone in my apologize is very important.
If my quick apology is said to end the awkward situation, or because Michael thinks I owe him one – then it doesn’t count because he can tell I’m not sincere.
I have to mean what I say with an understanding of why I was wrong.
A sincere, heartfelt apology includes a deeper understanding of how my actions or words hurt along with a description of how I could have handled the situation differently.
Apology Recipe Made of Sophisticated Ingredients
Maturity, wisdom, grace, compassion, empathy and acceptance; these sophisticated ingredients can create an apology into a beautiful moment of emotional connection and closeness between us.
Love isn’t always an easy journey.
But, it sure is worth it.
S, ♥️
