The Challenges Of Technology In Schools

I support students in a high school who have varied learning approaches. Some use assistive technology to help them through the day. This allows independence and freedom.

However, chrome books need to be monitored because preferred activities such as watching YouTube can quickly replace expected school work.

It’s an added hassle as some students spend most of their home time on technology, therefore they struggle to understand the importance of school, expectation, schedule and socialization.

Classrooms – Assistive Technology & Cell Phones & Computers & Human Connection

My job is about making the human connection first.

Assistive technology available at the public school level to support students who need it doesn’t change how we interact as a result of the limited training staff receive and minimal time spent with the student while trying to use the technology properly.

It is very frustrating and, at times, the technology seems rather useless.

Therefore, the human connection comes first while trying to make sense of the assistive technology that is meant to improve a student’s day at school.

Cell phones and computers in the classroom are a distraction.

Cell phones – always a distraction.

Computers are the way of the future, yes but keeping the kids on task is a real issue.

Whenever students get the opportunity – meaning the adult in the room turns their back – they’re on a website they shouldn’t be.

I see it every day, and have to redirect back to the task at hand.
