Long story short in 2022 I had a life-changing later in life proper diagnoses of Borderline Personality Disorder and Histrionic Personality Disorder to later explain why, when I was in my thirties – I had worked as many jobs as how old I was.
Back then, I felt like such a failure. I couldn’t find my role in life, my purpose.
What was I good at?
Why was I struggling so much to hold a job when others had their own car, home, and kids?
I never was able to truly understand how people were able to achieve those social standards of success.
I was living pay-cheque to pay-cheque, renting and taking the metro bus to travel around the city.
Decades later, I realize that working so many jobs over my lifetime taught me a variety of skills:
- how to adapt
- to be flexible
- to prioritize what needs to be done first
- friendly customer service
- organization
- how to have fun
- how to make a delicious pizza
- how to run a skills based program
- how to take care of a fish tank
- how to feed a film crew on a variety of locations
- how to be an actor in a television commercial
- how to lead a group of people on a kayak adventure
And so on…

How Has Failure Set Me Up For Later Success?
If all goes to plan, tomorrow I will sing in front of a school population of about 700 humans during an assembly in the gymnasium.
Have I done this before?
Nope.
That said, I have worked at this junior high school for six years, so I feel relatively safe and supported.
I won’t be alone as other faculty and staff will be playing boomwhackers and bucket drums to the song I am singing.
What is boomwhacking and bucket drumming?
I’ve posted two YouTube videos below to show you.
Our performance will not be as slick as the songs posted, we’ve only had two practices! However, there will be a large projector screen set up in the gym playing YouTube’s boomwhacking follow-along of the song for faculty and staff, to follow along.
The whole point is to have fun with the kids during tomorrow’s assembly that will wrap up the last day of school before March Break.
I’ve always had a dream of performing in front of a crowd and this is my chance to do so!
Even so, will I fail and Make a fool of myself in front of everyone?
Will my singing voice be pitchy and off key?
Will I be able to engage the kids to have them sing along – loudly – to drown out my voice?
Will this risk of daring to dream in front of my peers and student population be a failure?
Or will I give it a go – as best as I can – knowing any risk I take is about perspective.
No matter what happens, I took a risk, modelled being brave and will have a great story to tell!
And that will be my success.
