The Joy Of Pets: Unconditional Love And Loyalty

Daily writing prompt
What is good about having a pet?

2025

My reply to this prompt in 2024 was filled with anger of those who abuse animals.

This morning my focus will be on the unconditional love animals give us.

One constant in my life is the joy and love from our pets. They are happy every day. Happy to see us. Being with us. They look forward to snuggling with us. Our pets are pure love. Pure joy.

We have two rescue dogs from Texas, Vinnie and Pebbles and a rescue cat, Georgie we brought back to Canada with us from Qatar.

Recently, I enjoyed loving a school horse at an equestrian centre I attended. I was sad to leave the school for personal reasons, my heart deeply missing Tessa. However, I am grateful for the time I had and my love for her will always be in my heart.

Oh, this gets me fired up.

All our pets are rescues. Our cat from the compound we lived in while in Qatar. Our dogs from rescue shelters in Texas.

Most civilized humans understand what is good about having a pet.

Then there are the uncivilized humans.

The variety and means cats, dogs, bunnies, ferrets, and other types of furry pets are horribly treated by these uncivilized humans is beyond my ability to comprehend.

These animals with souls, feelings and personality are purchased as cute, then soon forgotten when the work is too much, the cost too much and/or the cuteness has worn off.

Cats and dogs are left along the side of the road as their owners drive away.

Bunnies, ferrets and guinea pigs are abandoned in the forest to fend for themselves.

Cats, dogs and other pets are left in homes when their owners move away.

Adult dogs are dropped off at kill shelters to be replaced by a cute puppy for Christmas (for real).

Dogs are dropped off at kill shelters for so many other horrible reasons.

Cats and dogs are euthanized at vets because of health issues the owners can’t afford to pay.

Cats and dogs are left outside in temperatures a human couldn’t be out in without a warm coat.

Dogs are tied up outside to a dog house, never to be a part of the family pack.

The list goes on and on and on….

Then there are the puppy mill/backyard breeders. 🤬

Like some people should never have children because they do not deserve the gift of being a parent.

I’d say most people do not deserve the gift of the love and loyalty of a pet – based on the number of dogs alone in Texas who need new homes.
