What Would You Attempt If You Knew You’d Succeed?

I started writing a story, a book early in the year of 1997.

The only way I can describe what happened was suddenly, had the urge to write.

It was as if a portal from another world entered by brain and poured this story and its characters into me.

I sat at a my new second hand computer, when floppy discs were a thing, and this entire fantasy world of characters and mystical lands came out of me.

Characters and mystical lands I had never thought of or dreamed of before.

They just appeared one day, in my mind while I let my fingers on the keyboard try to keep up with the ideas pouring out of me.

I was locked in hyper-focus, sitting and writing, day after day, ten hours at a time, as this fantasy world unfolded before me.

Meanwhile, at this time in my life, I was deep in the beginnings of what would be a lifelong therapeutic journey.

Writing this book seemed to be a first step, a cathartic way of finding my voice.

I stopped writing the book in June of 1997, after I read J. K. Rowlings, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone because I didn’t want that story to influence what I had started with my own fantastical creation.

I needed to stay true to my own voice.

Below are three main characters I created ,designed by local artist Hannah Quinn.

Issabeau is a metaphorical me – feeling lost, uncertain and angry at the world.

Malfius is a protective father figure.

Zarus represents a protective older sister.

Finishing and publishing this book would be the “something” I attempt, if guaranteed I wouldn’t fail.
