I think my past self would be proud that I have worked the same job since 2010.
This is significant for me.
Back in 2006, during a résumé-building workshop, I discovered—through a mind-mapping exercise—that, up to that point, I had worked as many jobs as my age at the time: 37.
Therefore, the fact that I have been able to maintain, develop, grow, and learn in the same job has helped me overcome the shame I felt from struggling to find meaningful employment.
My struggle to find meaningful employment was the result of ongoing mental health misdiagnoses, treatments that were not helping, a sense of profound emptiness, and no clear sense of personal identity.
I was lost, drifting in the world like a leaf blowing in the wind.
Today, I occasionally struggle to find meaning in my job, as the toxic environment often overshadows its purpose.
Yet, I view it as a way to practice mindfulness: observing rather than taking things personally, being impeccable with my word, not making assumptions, and being gentle with myself.
