Yes, I regretted having to read high school’s mandatory choices of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm by George Orwell and Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
These books brought up ugly emotions as a result of the ugly side of human nature that I didn’t enjoy having to read about.

I did not like gatsby, I did not read animal farm but I did not like 1984 br Orwell and the lord of the flies I read in high school and I did like it if I recall.
I only read Animal Farm at school, I didn’t hang around for the rest😂 I enjoyed it but I think it does give a young mind a kind of hopelessness. A bit like the politics of today. Loved the Great Gatsby but that’s possibly from the writing style perspective rather than the story, it’s pretty grim. But then when I think about it a lot of great books are grim. Thank goodness for Maive Binchy and Jane Austen 😂
Totally understand this one 📚 Gatsby, Animal Farm, and Lord of the Flies really are a trio built around humanity’s darker instincts, heavy material to process as required reading rather than something you chose for yourself. Makes sense they’d stick with you the wrong way!

Sorry, you had a bad experience with those. Gatsby is not my favorite, but I do think high school reads, can be completely at least largely define by the way of the teacher presents them. They’re not happy stories, but we can find. Lessons in them .speaking as a high school teacher. 🙂
It’s true – the teacher makes the difference. I’m supporting a student in a University Prep Grade 12 Literature class. He’s engaging, entertaining, makes current trend connections to the stories. I foresee Lord of the Flies in my near future. 🙈 And I predict this teacher will make it interesting!
