I had to think about this, beyond the original movie Star Wars I watched in theatres when it was released in May of 1977. I was eight years old. I left that movie wanting my own Chewbacca, style my hair in cinnamon buns like Princess Leia and marry Han Solo.
Thinking more about this question, I would like to go back to experience Judy Blume’s book, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.
I was around the same age as the main character, Margaret when I discovered this book.
But, I wasn’t allowed to read it.
The book had its challenges when it was published, because of its straight-forward discussions on puberty and religion.
This explained why I wasn’t allowed to read it as I was growing up in a strict, and loving Roman Catholic home.
So, going back, I would have the opportunity to read the book that spoke to all the natural curiosities I was having at that pre-teen age.
You know: puberty, bras, boys, menstruation and all the anxieties that go along with that age.
As well, the book explored religion and seeking one’s own spiritual understanding.
