The Importance Of Summer Break For Public Education Staff

Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite holiday? Why is it your favorite?

My favourite holiday is Summer Break. While I love everything about Christmas, working as support staff in Nova Scotia’s public education system has me counting down to summer break.

I do enjoy my job, and it demands peak mental, emotional, spiritual and physical performance to professionally navigate both students and staff.

Performance means I need to be on my mental and emotional game so I remain patient, kind and tolerant.

I need to be spiritually fit so I “pause”, remembering the 12-Step spiritual principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Physically fit means I do not injure my back with toileting support for a heavy teenage student in a motorized wheelchair, as well as being able to walk for long periods of time with a non-verbal, Autistic student, while keeping up when he has sudden bursts of running energy.

Mix into this, faculty and support staff who are a variety of adult personality types. Not all are working on themselves, dragging their unresolved or real-time issues to work with them.

Yup, it’s a circus out there.

Am I mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically fit each day at work?

Absolutely not.

Some days are golden, other days not so much.

It’s exhausting.

Add to that, support staff’s monthly income does not come close to affording Nova Scotia’s high cost of living. That’s a shit show in and of itself.

Any person who does not understand why education staff get the summer off, walk a month in my shoes and see how long you last.

We need it to recharge to prepare for the next 10-month round in the public education ring.

Hmmm. Your essay seems to have chatgpt included so you’ll have to rewrite and see Mr Pender in the front office. You will be required to write whilst invigilated by the head of department after school hours. Additionally, due to the severity of your mindlessness, you will no longer have a summer break but will be required to teach grade 9 English classes for our local Penitentiary.

    1. I spoke with Mr. Pender. He approved my use of ChatGPT to create the feature image for my essay, while afterwards applauding my descriptive narrative to direct AI in such a detailed way.

I have spoken to Mr Pender too. You seem to underestimate the seriousness of using AI in a school setting. You will be brought to account at the next PTA meeting and school district AGM. Pictures with AI help is no excuse for your flagrant attitude towards plagiarism, even for correcting your spelling. You will no longer be permitted any professional days, half days, sick days, or cake-Fridays.

      2. Bahahaha!!!!! 😂😂😂

I was a teacher for 18 years, I definitely agree that summer break is the best time of the year! Enjoy yours!
