I do not have an influential teacher from my days in elementary, junior and high school; someone who inspired me to choose a career path, or help me find my way in any way where I was struggling.
There were some memorable moments with a few teachers and administration.
However, influential is not a descriptive word I think of when I reflect back on my school days.
Decades later, my career is in education. I am support staff with students who need an extra helping hand along the way.
One skill I bring to students is the practice of mindfulness. Bringing their attention to their breath when they are activated and struggle to regulate their emotions.
We: S.T.O.P.
S – Stop. T – Take a breath. O – Observe. P – Proceed mindfully.
Initially, this doesn’t always work. However, practice becomes familiar. Familiar becomes easier recall. Easier recall makes less resistance when the student is activated.
