Describe the most ambitious DIY project you’ve ever taken on.

2026

A year later and a lot has changed with Penny Lane.

We are into the interior phase. Michael is almost finished painting the upstairs living area. Next will be flooring then kitchen/bathroom counters.

The bathroom is almost finished. The toilet is installed and working. The windows leak, because the roofing around them is not yet finished. The walls need another coat of paint. The bathtub isn’t sealed in, as there is a leak that needs to be fixed. It still needs a cabinet, mirror and shelves. We will also install a TV that can be viewed while in the tub.

Penny Lane

Michael and I’s most ambitions DIY project is Penny Lane.

Penny Lane is our name for the 4.5 acres of undeveloped, lakefront property we bought in 2019.

Michael designed and is (pretty much) single-handedly building our dome home on Penny Lane.

While we purchased Penny Lane in 2019, as a result of many setbacks and COVID’s cost effects on building supplies, Michael was finally able to start building our dome home in the summer of 2022.

Due to the complexity of his design, nothing has been straightforward while dealing with roofing, concrete, and/or window contractors – things he cannot manufacture or do himself.

His research for just-right products within our budget has been exhaustive and frustrating. Two steps forward, five steps back.

While Michael is endeavouring to build the dome, I work full time and take care of the everyday living responsibilities.

Working in education permits me summer break to happily shift focus to gardening and developing, caring for and maintaining Penny Lane’s yard and beyond.

A lot has changed since these photos were taken in April of 2024.

The dome has its elastomeric covering. The yard sodded. The garden started. Our own entrance, driveway put in.

Penny Lane is our journey of love.
