Cognitive Processing Therapy – Themes – Power & Control

How CPT Works

CPT Themes

There are five themes that are areas in life that were affected by trauma or as a result of trauma.

These themes are:

  • Safety
  • Trust
  • Power/Control
  • Esteem
  • Intimacy

Each theme takes the view of how I view myself and how I view others.

What Is Power & Control?

This is the belief I can solve problems and meet challenges that I may face .

As well as the belief that I can control others or future events, related to others – including people in power.

I think about power and control in terms of what I have power and control over, and the biggest struggle for me is my perception of any given situation and what influence I have in it.

The switch is moving from seeing myself as a non-entity (trauma based) to an empowered woman with choices.

The difficult part is navigating the trauma response of fear when it happens.

But, this is the learning curve of CPT – to move from the cycle of trauma and into empowerment.

It won’t happen over night.

The goal is to at least put a crack in the core belief/stuck point of powerlessness.

I think about the profound freedom in letting something go.

Something terrifying, too.

The need for certainty can be overwhelming.

But the difference is that I am no longer a powerless child or young adult.

I am an empowered adult woman navigating the core beliefs and stuck points created by my younger selves.

Healing takes time.

So, I practice saying to myself:

What ever will be, will be.

And whatever will be: I can handle.

Because the future is hard to see.

Therefore: Que Sera Sera.

Add to this is the spiritual practice within the 12-Step program I attend, of letting go to a Higher Power.

This is trusting in a benevolent force outside of myself that all will be well when I Let Go and Let God (of my understanding).

I’m not quite there yet as the God I grew up with was a punishing, judgemental God with a list of rules that, if not followed – I went to hell.

A religion where its followers put their beliefs over that of another human who may walk a different path in their beliefs or sexuality. A religion that divides families – even countries.

I just cannot understand this.

So, I return to:

Que Sera Sera.

And GOD = Group of Drunks (in an AA meeting) or a Quantum Entanglement like Supernatural Benevolent Energy, God – but does this God have a consciousness? That’s the mystery.

The mystery of faith.
