Unlock Happiness: Key DBT Skills Explained

Originally Published: October 30th, 2024

I believe every person should know and practice Dialectical Behaviour Therapy’s (DBT) four core life skills:

  • Mindfulness
  • Distress Tolerance
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness

If every person in the world took a pause, a breath and was mindful of the moment this would help reduce suffering and increase happiness.

If everyone understood their own levels of distress tolerance, they would not make a crisis situation worse.

If everyone knew how to pause, regulate their emotions and be skillful before they act, this would decrease emotional suffering.

If everyone understood interpersonal effectiveness skills, walking a middle path, while building effective relationships and ending destructive ones, this would decrease emotional suffering.

DBT skills help reduce suffering and increase happiness, to be skillful in your life.

Then, you can take a breath, live in today – today is a gift – that is why it is called the present.

As Master Oogway says,

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the “present.”

Let today be a gift for you…
